Formula

How it works

  • EV cost per mile = kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100 × electricity rate
  • Gas cost per mile = gasoline price ÷ mpg
  • Per year = cost per mile × 12,000 miles, for each
  • Difference per year = gas per year − EV per year

The EPA figure is measured at the wall, so charging losses are already in it. The comparison covers energy only: no purchase price, insurance or maintenance (the 5-year EV, plug-in hybrid and gas calculator adds maintenance).

Worked example

A worked example

In California, at 33.6¢/kWh and $4.70/gal, an F-150 Lightning costs about $0.161 a mile to charge at home, and a 20 mpg gas truck costs $0.235 a mile in fuel. Over 12,000 miles that's $1,935.94 for the EV and $2,820.00 for gasoline, a difference of $884.06 a year.

Questions

FAQ

Is charging an EV cheaper than gas in your state?

At the US's average prices, a Tesla Model 3 RWD costs $0.046 a mile to charge at home and a 30 mpg gas car costs $0.107 a mile in fuel: $730.70 a year over 12,000 miles. The gap depends on two prices: your electricity rate and your gasoline price. Both are on the page and you can change them.

What about public fast charging?

Fast chargers charge more per kWh than most homes pay. Type the fast-charging price per kWh into the electricity rate field, and the result shows the cost per mile on the road. Many drivers mix both: the EV charging cost calculator lets you set the share you charge at home.

How do time-of-use rates change this?

If your utility has a cheaper overnight rate and you charge then, type that rate in. The EV cost per mile drops in direct proportion to the rate.

Does the EV's efficiency matter as much as the price of power?

Yes. A Model 3 RWD uses 25 kWh per 100 miles; an F-150 Lightning uses 48. At the same rate, the truck costs almost twice as much per mile to charge. Compare EVs with EVs and trucks with trucks.

Is the difference a saving I'll see?

It's an estimate of fuel cost only, at average prices, for 12,000 miles. Your real cost depends on how much you drive, where you charge and your utility's rate structure.
